Open-source seismic software

OpendTect is an open source seismic analysis, visualization and interpretation system available for internet download. The software enables seismic interpreters to process, visualize and interpret multi-volume seismic data using attributes and modern visualization techniques such as stereo viewing and volume rendering. For more advanced work, commercial and free plugins are available. Due to its open source structure, OpendTect programmers can develop their own tools as plugins to the system. The software is supported on PC-Linux, Sun-Solaris, SGI-Irix and MS Windows (2000/NT/XP). Heavy processing of large volumes can be carried out in batch mode on multiple machines. Any combination of Unix platforms and machines (single processors, dual processors and clusters) that can be accessed through the network can be used for this purpose. The Windows version is stand-alone.

High-viscosity pumps

Fig 1Moyno, Inc. has redesigned its Moyno 2000 G3 Pump. This new design provides maximum performance for medium- to high-viscosity, high-solids content applications, such as heavy petroleum sludges, where bridging is a significant concern. The 2000 G3 features a new bridge breaker anti-bridging mechanism, which operates at speeds independent of the pump's rotation to optimize fluid feed control for increased pumping efficiency. A single auger feed mechanism moves the product through an extension tube to the pump element, ensuring it is fed directly into the cavity instead of recirculating in the hopper.

Heavy-duty power end

Fig 2The Flowserve Corp. released its new Prima3 Power End. Fashioned after the widely accepted Durco ANSI 3A power end, the heavy-duty Prima3 is adaptable to any ANSI chemical process pump, regardless of manufacturer, simplifying maintenance and repair. Prima3 has the largest shaft and bearing components available in standard ANSI pumps. It is assembled in a certified clean room and uses Inpro/Seal's VBXX non-contact Vapor Block Bearing Isolators to keep contaminants out.

Reservoir property analysis

Landmark Graphics Corp. introduces DecisionSpace Well Seismic Fusion, a suite of interpretation and analysis tools for predicting reservoir rock properties from prestack seismic data, synthetic data and well data. Working closely with Statoil, Landmark developed Well Seismic Fusion to leverage the detailed information contained in prestack seismic data to build earth models and more accurately predict reservoir lithology and fluids. This technology provides an integrated interpretation environment enabling asset team members to improve reservoir understanding and reduce exploration risk. Well Seismic Fusion is integrated with SeisWorks workflows and OpenWorks data management.

Compact steam traps

Flowserve has introduced the new ECONOline series of steam traps. Built with an extremely compact design, the ECONOline series is available in three different styles: thermostatic capsule, thermostatic bi-metallic, and thermodynamic disc. The traps fit all existing universal connectors and require no initial setting or readjustment. The series is designed to provide reliability without any loss of steam.

Flowrate measurement

Following testing, calibration witness and documentation inspection, Halliburton Energy Services' FastQ Multiphase Flow Meter System was certified for deployment in Kazakhstan. The technology is a skid-mounted mobile system capable of measuring the flowrates of oil, water and gas continuously, without mixing or separating fluids. It is used for reservoir evaluation and monitoring in producing wells. It has been tested at independent flow-test laboratories in Norway, Brazil and the UK. The FastQ system provides an accurate, non-radioactive solution for multiphase measurement, using a proven method of mass measurement.

High pressure filters

Fig 3Hydraulic Filter Division of Parker Hannifin Corp. introduces its new 12S Series line of lightweight high-pressure filters to provide high capacity and high efficiency for demanding oil and gas and other applications. The 12S Series utilizes high strength Microglass III elements with multi-layer media and wire-reinforced pleats providing a 2000-psid collapse strength for high capacity, while preventing performance loss from pleat bunching. The filters exceed multipass test ANSI/NFPA T3.10.88 R1-1990. They feature a flexible porting system to reduce piping and the use of adapters, and a drain port allows all oil to be removed from the assembly prior to servicing to eliminate cross contamination.

Pressure gauges

Fig 4Swagelok industrial process thermoplastic pressure gauges monitor vacuum and positive system pressures up to 15,000 psi (100,000 kPa) in the chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, and other industries. Featuring 115- and 160-mm dial sizes in lower-back mount and lower mount configurations, the pressure gauges can be ordered with male NPT or Swagelok tube adapter end connections, which allows users to rotate the gauge for viewing. Available unfilled or liquid-filled with glycerin or silicone, these solid-front gauges feature a thermoplastic, turret-style case and blowout back for use in severe service.

Wellbore schematics

WellEz Information Management, LLC, released a new version of their web-based wellbore schematic application. VisuWell allows users to log on from anywhere in the world and create high-quality wellbore schematics that can be dynamically shared with other users, for example, between the office and rig site. A navigation panel allows component selection from a range of categories such as drill bits, packers, casing, etc., which can then be copied to the drawing tablet, where they are resized and positioned on the drawing. The result can be saved to a database for future recall, or saved as an image file for use in other applications.

Miniature spectrometer

The Ocean Optics HR4000-UV-NIR High-resolution Miniature Fiber Optic Spectrometer enables scientists to perform multi-wavelength analysis over a broad 200–1100-nm range with 0.5-nm resolution. The pre-configured spectrometer provides application flexibility, capable of measuring irradiance, emission, absorbance/ transmission and reflectance. Features include: Software-controlled triggering and timing functions; fast minimum integration time, eliminating saturation in bright-light measurements; programmable digital and analog outputs; USB 2.0 technology, which sends complete scans into a PC's memory every 4 ms. HR4000CG-UV-NIR uses a proprietary HC-1 Landis Grating, an OFLV order-sorting filter, and a 3648-element detector for high resolution capabilities. The device is powered from the PC and does not need an external power supply.

Drilling fluid for deep water

A synthetic-base drilling fluid with a flat rheological profile making it suited for deepwater environments was introduced by M-I SWACO. The Rheliant system has rheological properties that are independent of temperature, especially yield point, low shear rate and gel strengths. The drilling fluid improves hole cleaning and reduces barite sag, pressure spikes, excessive gel strengths and other problems that come when an operator struggles with equivalent circulative densities.

Sample analyzer membrane

Guardian membrane filters from United Filtration Systems provide protection beyond the coalescing range. A porous PTFE membrane, supported by a sintered stainless steel disc, lets gas and vapor molecules pass through, stopping all liquid and diverting it to the drain port. The Guardian permits easy access to the actual membrane disc. The housing's base component has an integral mounting bracket along with all the line connections, for inlet, outlet, drain, and bypass.
