Compact logging head

Fig 1AnTech Ltd introduced the latest addition to its range of logging tools with the launch of its new 7/8-in. Logging Head, along with the company's new Casing Collar Locator (CCL). The Logging Head and CCL work together to pinpoint location and positioning of casing downhole by sensing the tubing joints. Fitting the CCL with rare earth magnets offers stronger signal strength and sensitivity, so that it is capable of locating joints with greater accuracy. With its extremely small diameter, the new AnTech Logging Head-CCL system is suited for back-off operations in slimhole applications. Also the head could be used in coiled tubing operations where the BHA has become stuck and the release has failed or is not present. The system can be used in temperatures to 200°C and pressures of 20,000 psi.

Seismic sensing system

ABB has developed PS3 (Permanent Seismic Sensing System). Testing has shown that the deployment technology is effective at flowrates in excess of 30,000 bpd, with noise-rejection capabilities that are 30 to 40dB better than existing mechanisms. The hydraulically activated clamping system is passive, involving no downhole electric or hydraulic motors, and delivers multi-component resonance-free signals to 1000 Hz. The system enables continuous acquisition of high quality active and passive seismic data in flowing wells for the life-of-field. ABB carried out an integrated R&D program to monitor and understand fundamental processes involved in acoustic noise generation and transmission in oilfield completions. The program used a purpose-built and highly instrumented borehole flow-loop facility, which required the drilling of a test borehole that could be accessed from either end (uphole and downhole). This test well was drilled through a quarry wall at the ABB test facility, enabling seismic instrumentation to be placed behind casing, inside casing and on production tubing. The physical experimentation was coupled with analytical modeling to help understand the dynamic coupled hydro-mechanical interactions taking place. The plot shows RMS noise against flowrate – increase in flow noise on geophones that are coupled to the production tubing or are mounted in bow-spring type deployment devices. The PS3 system however, shows a similar response to the geophones cemented behind the casing, with increased flowrate having almost no correlation with increased flow noise.

Submersible pump brochure

A new brochure from Wood Group ESP highlights the company's line of high-efficiency electrical submersible pumps and motors. Artificial lift systems are designed and manufactured based on the SmartArchitecture model, which allows complete monitoring of the entire ESP system, data logging, control and interface via computer from any location. The brochure also details the company's line of downhole gas compressors/ separators, seal sections, submersible motors, cables, surface pumping systems, etc., and includes detailed cutaway drawings and specifications.

Russian trade guide

Russia: All 89 Regions Trade and Investment Guide is a 1,200-page volume with interactive CD ROM that makes clear the government structure and personalities, industries, firms and products, imports and exports, natural resources, climate, crops, geography, population and demography, infrastructure, law and tax systems and current investment opportunities for each of Russia's 89 regions. The purpose of the guide is to represent trade and investment opportunities in a standard way required by the international community. Its information and statistics are organized and presented in a Western business style and format.

Formation pressure testing

The TesTrak system from Baker Hughes INTEQ, a logging-while-drilling system, measures formation pressure through direct contact with the formation and transmits the data to surface in real time. An intelligent, closed loop, drawdown control system allows a complete test in 5 minutes or less. Tests performed in multiple Norwegian shelf wells showed that TesTrak measurements compared very well. This was the first LWD formation pressure tester to be officially qualified by Statoil.

Wellbore debris removal

Fig 3The Bilco Riser Waste Retriever is a large capacity (14-gal) debris-capturing tool. Product features screened drainage for positive debris removal, Ventura porting to enhance debris capture through fluid manipulation, and robust solid mandrel design with 6-5/8-in. regular connection for superior torsion and tensile yield strength. In deepwater completions, the product ensures higher degree of cleanliness required to ensure against NPT from debris left in wellbore.

Metering pump CD

A CD available from seepex, Inc., showcases the new integrated DC motor and controller for its small metering, dosing, and transfer pumps. The 120 VAC controller accommodates low-flow, run-dry and high-pressure protection, without the need for external enclosures. The unit will deliver flows from 2 cc/min to 4 gpm and pressures to 350 psi. It can be operated manually or with a 4-20 mA process control signal. The pumps are suited for oil water separation polymers, diluents, paraffin strippers, catalyst injection, and other metering applications in the petroleum industry.

Online consultants directory

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has launched the SPE E&P Consultants Directory, a searchable database of consultants in the upstream oil and gas industry. This free online service puts users in contact with individuals or companies who can meet their specific consulting needs. Additionally, consultants can list themselves in the directory to reach a targeted group of potential customers. Database can be searched by name, technical terms or geographic region. Terms can be submitted as phrases or key words. Detailed information is available on consultants' services, and contact data is provided. Individuals or companies providing consulting services in the upstream oil and gas industry are eligible for a directory listing.

Mobile flare system

Fig 4BJ Process and Pipeline Services (BJ PPS) announced that its variable-tip flare system is now trailer-mounted, making the system fully mobile. The Mobile Flare System, introduced in 1999 as the Hi-Lo variable tip flare system, is used to achieve a clean, smoke-free burn of harmful waste gases with minimal impact on the environment. It is now available in a self-erected trailer-mounted incinerator. It is a completely enclosed, fully insulated system in which electronically controlled combustion occurs. An integrated control cabin is used to monitor and report flowrate, pressure, temperature and emission data in real time, ensuring adherence to regional environmental legislation. Data is logged and recorded to preserve a complete record of the process. The system is fully automated and incinerates gases at a burning temperature of more than 1000°C, delivering incineration efficiencies of greater than 99%, in conformance with current European Community directives.

Cold weather lubricants

ANDEROL PumpJack 150 is a synthetic-based lubricant specifically formulated to optimize pump jack energy efficiency and performance in cold weather. With energy savings of up to 14%, this gearbox lubricant also exhibits good water separation, excellent wear and rust protection, and improved oxidation stability. The ROYCO 800 series are synthetic-based compressor lubricants engineered with high film strength to protect against corrosion. Formulated with pour points as low as – 55°C, they provide exceptional cold-weather protection for compressor components.

Hard and abrasive PDCs

Hughes Christensen has introduced Genesis XT, an extension of their Genesis product line that expands the application envelope of PDC drilling into harder and more abrasive formations. Building on the Genesis multi-functional approach, HCC engineers have incorporated a new generation of cutters and depth-of-cut control technology to increase bit stability and durability in demanding applications. In the Odyssey Series Cutters, Engineers optimized the interface between the tungsten carbide substrate and the synthetic diamond table to significantly improve cutter toughness. Layered diamond table technology was applied to provide improved abrasion resistance. In the SmoothCut line, EZSteer depth-of-cut control technology was adapted for general-purpose applications to provide smoother, more stable drilling, especially through interbedded formations, improving bit longevity.

Digital mud gauge

Fig 5Houston Digital Instruments (HDI) introduced the HDI 100 mud gauge, which incorporates the technology of the 14-year-old HDI 2000 Panel Gauge and eliminates maintenance concerns associated with hydraulic gauges. Key features include: 1) Readings in 10-psi increments; 2) Faster washout and kick detection; 3) Improved safety from eliminating pressurized hydraulic fluids in the gauge head; and 4) Reliability under extreme temperatures and harsh environments. Products can be ordered with a variety of connections for direct installation on stand pipes, mud pumps, manifolds and other applications.
