Conoco Inc. named Gary W. Edwards senior executive vice president, corporate strategy and development, the principal advisor to the chairman and CEO. Conoco Exploration Production for the Americas named Gary Merriman as president, succeeding John R. Kemp III, who is retiring after a 34-year career with Conoco.

The PIC Group, Inc., appointed Craig M. Hurlbert senior VP, strategic initiatives.

Sandvik Steel appointed Ola Rollén president, succeeding Per Ericson.

Richard A. Brown has been appointed to head Environmental Resources Management’s new Remediation Technology Group (RTG), a part of its Site Remediation Practice. Included in RTG is the Remediation Technology Center, which provides technology evaluation and development services. RTC will be directed by George J. Skladany, who has been named program director.

BJ Services appointed Alasdair Buchanan region manager of its Well Services Division for the Europe-Africa Region.

Bradley B.P. (Brad) Smith joined Delta Computer Systems’ motion control applications specialist team.

The American Petroleum Institute appointed Kendra L. Martin to head the new Department of Finance, Accounting, Electronic Business and Information Technology.

Lucio A. Noto, chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp., was named the 1999 Petroleum Executive of the Year for his leadership in Mobil’s merger with Exxon, his determination to focus on shareholder value, and his major contribution to advance public policy debate on energy-related issues. The award was presented by last year’s recipient Chairman and CEO of Petroleos deVenezuela at the 20th Oil and Money Conference, co-hosted by Energy Intelligence Group and the International Herald Tribune.

John P. Peterson, president and COO of Warren Electric Group, resigned his position to pursue a career change. Cheryl L. Thompson-Draper, CEO, has assumed the additional position of acting president of Electrical/Automation.

J. R. Butler and Company appointed N. Ray Maldonado and Nels E. Voldseth to VP, engineering and geology, respectively.

Larry C. Payne joined Enterprise Products Partners as supply and marketing senior VP. Thomas M. Zulim was named as director of business management for fractionation services.

Industrial Scientific Corp. elected Jeffrey B. Morgan operations VP, a newly created position.

Robert K. Meith joined Production Management Industries, Inc.’s, construction services group as general manager. Phil Schneider joined the business development group.

Weatherford International, Inc., appointed Mark Hopmann and Gary Warren as senior VPs.

Mark Taylor was appointed regional support manager for Paradigm Geophysical’s new office in Bahrain.

GPU, Inc., promoted Michael Hughes to executive VP, international operations of GPU Services, Inc., and Ronald P. Lantzy was appointed president of GPU International.

Exxon Mobil Corp. named L. R. Raymond as chairman and CEO and L. A. Noto as vice chairman. The 19-member board will include six directors from Mobil and 13 from Exxon.

Waukesha Engine Division appointed William M. McCormick and Lloyd S. Beauchamp to VP engineering and sales, respectively.

Michael P. Owen joined EDG, Inc., as project manager.

Chairman and CEO James W. (Jim) Roxburgh assumed the title of president for Highwood Resources Ltd. Garry Lynkowski resigned as president, but will continue as CFO and a director of the company.

Compressor Services, Inc., promoted Stirling Warren to Compression Services western region VP.

In memoriam

Former District Manager of Gulf Publishing Co. for 25 years passed away on Aug. 30, 1999. James William (Jim) Merrill was born on July 30, 1925. After serving in the Marine Corp. in the Pacific theater during World War II, he graduated from Oklahoma A & M in 1949. He worked at a newspaper at Norton, Kansas, and then Coffeyville, and from there to Port Arthur, Texas, and later Houston, Texas, where he began his career of 25 years with Gulf Publishing Co. After retiring in 1982, Merrill returned to Coffeyville. Survivors include his wife, Ella Mae, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Geoffrey David of South Pasadena, California, and Stephen Joseph and Sue, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, with six grandchildren Anna, Caroline and Patrick Merrill and Brian, Adam and Lindsay Merrill.
