Shell announces pause in Arctic drilling program
BY ED BALLARD
LONDON -- Shell reported it will pause its exploration drilling activity for 2013 in Alaska's Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, saying it remains committed to drilling in the region again in the future.
Shell said that the decision to pause will give the company time to ensure the readiness of all equipment and people following drilling in 2012. Shell says company continues to use its extensive experience in Arctic and sub Arctic environments to prepare for safe activities in Alaska as it sees high potential over the long term.
After the drilling season ended, the Kulluk drilling rig was damaged in a maritime incident related to strong weather conditions. Kulluk and Noble Discoverer will be towed to locations in Asia for maintenance and repairs.
