Shell Nigeria declares force majeure due to sabotage

BY SELINA WILLIAMS AND BENOIT FAUCON

LONDON -- A Shell Nigeria subsidiary has declared force majeure on supplies to its LNG plant, following a suspected leak in an area frequently targeted by thieves.

Loading of a LNG vessel at NLNG jetty has been suspended as there is insufficient cargo supply, Shell said. Shell said the measure was "due to production deferment following a suspected leak on the right of way of a gas line near Soku gas plant."

As a safety precaution, the Soku and Gbaran-Ubie gas plants have been shut down while SPDC investigates the source and cause of the leak, the company said. The pipelines serving the plants are often punctured by thieves seeking consendates to produce home-made refined products.
