Joint integrity company Hydratight has introduced the Quick Release Nut, which it refers to as a “small, but valuable, subsea tool.” The compact, uncomplicated nut has just two moving parts, and has been used in more than 25 successful subsea projects. As extraction takes place at ever-increasing depths, the need for remote activation of bolted applications has become apparent. The Quick Release Nut uses the latest technology, allowing for quick removal from a tightened stud bolt. It provides a reliable, remote system that can achieve disconnection times of less than 5 sec per stud, dependent on depth, with either umbilical or ROV operation. The Quick Release Nut uses embedded hydraulic cylinders, which enable operation from a tightened stud bolt. It also incorporates a unique, three-segment nut design, set into a cage, to ensure maximum security of the nut, when it is in position, and during application and removal. It requires low pressure for removal, with less than 120 bar actuating the piston rod. The piston rod, in turn, retracts the cage and releases the three segment nuts, immediately releasing the threads, ensuring quick, simple removal, even in the harshest conditions.
