Scotland calls for transparency over Total North Sea gas leak

BY SARAH KENT

LONDON -- Scotland called Wednesday for a high level of transparency from Total SA and the U.K. government over the serious gas leak that started on the French oil major's Elgin field in the North Sea Sunday.

"It is critical both Total and the U.K. government ensure absolute transparency, with all information placed in the public domain," said Scottish Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead. "This should include not just details on the level of risk, but also how this is calculated."

The gas leak is still ongoing, four days after it first started. It has caused a sheen of gas condensate of six nautical miles to form and sent a plume of gas into the sky. The gas condensate is expected to disperse naturally, and as it stands the environmental risks are thought to be minimal.

"However, we are not complacent and are continually reviewing the situation," Lochhead said.
