Sandvik introduces advanced steel, special alloys for demanding offshore applications

HOUSTON – Oil and gas operators are venturing into deeper waters and encountering challenging HPHT conditions and corrosive environments. Such extreme conditions call for tougher stainless steel and special alloys for an extensive range of applications from well intervention to topsides, subsea and downhole tubing and flowlines. A leading supplier of such advanced materials technology is Sandvik, a high-technology materials technology and engineering group.

Sandvik operates a single-source, global solution for control and chemical injection lines. The company operates a dedicated service center, backed up by extensive warehouse stocks. This ensures just-in-time deliveries for cut-to-length lines or a group of lines encapsulated, flushed, filled and delivered directly to site.

“The oil and gas sector is one of our most important market areas,” explained Nigel Haworth, Sandvik Global Sales & Marketing Manager, Oil & Gas. “Today, our products are used throughout the world on some of the deepest and most demanding wells. Offering the right material solutions allows oil and gas producers to keep their production safe, reliable and cost efficient.”

Sandvik’s expertise in advanced stainless steels and other corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) enables the company to provide a comprehensive product portfolio, ranging from seamless and welded tube and pipe through to fittings and flanges, bar and hollow bar, wirelines, hot isostatic press (HIP) products in near-net shapes. Sandvik materials such as the hyper-duplex stainless steel grade SAF 3207™ HD, offers seamless tube with higher yield strengths providing the capability to withstand increased pressure. It also enables thinner wall umbilicals, which in turn, reduces weight and reel sizes, helping to lower installation costs in deepwater applications.

In aggressive and corrosive environments, downhole production casing and tubing strings can encounter sour well conditions. High-alloy materials from Sandvik, such as Sanicro™28, have excellent resistance to severe conditions containing hydrogen sulphides, carbon dioxide and chlorides. For the production of products in near-net shapes, Sandvik brings powder metallurgically-based hot isostatic pressing (HIP) for the manufacture of complex components such as manifolds, swivels and wye-pieces.

A Sandvik ClikLoc™ rapid action connector is available for riser applications and welding consumables.
