Petronas expects Melaka LNG regasification plant to start in 2Q 2013

BY ABHRAJIT GANGOPADHYAY

KUALA LUMPUR -- Petronas expects a LNG regasification facility in Melaka to start operation by the second quarter of 2013. Tenaga Nasional plans to source gas from the Melaka plant, and had expected Petronas to start production in the first quarter.

Gas currently accounts for about 44% of Tenaga Nasional mix and Petronas have compensated Tenaga Nasional to offset the cost of more expensive fuel it has to use in lieu of the natural gas that was to be supplied by Petronas. In the June August period Tenaga Nasional got $245 million in compensation. Last month Tenaga Nasional said that it hoped Petronas' s regasification plant will start operation by March next year.
