PetroChina starts building third phase of West-East natural gas pipeline

BY SARAH CHEN

BEIJING -- PetroChina has begun construction of the third phase of the West-East natural gas pipeline. Construction began in northwestern Xinjiang Uighur autonomous region and southeastern Fujian province, the two ends of the third phase, CCTV said.

The West-East natural gas pipeline is China' s largest energy and infrastructure project by investment value in the past 10 years, with a combined cost of $46 billion for its first two phases, the state-run People' s Daily newspaper said last week. The first two phases spanned a combined 15,000 km, making it the world' s longest pipeline, it said.

PetroChina began building the pipeline' s first phase in 2002 and completed it in 2004. Construction of the second phase began in 2009 and will reach Hong Kong by the end of this year.

The third phase, expected to be completed in 2015, is designed to transport 30 Bcmpy natural gas from northwestern to southeastern China.
