Norwegian Petroleum Directorate announces small North Sea oil discovery

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN -- Lundin Petroleum Norway, operator of production license 519, has concluded the drilling of wildcat well 6201/11- 3 in the northern part of the North Sea. The well was drilled about 65 km north-west of the Snorre field.

The primary exploration target for the well was to prove petroleum in reservoir rock from the Upper Cretaceous (the Shetland group) and in the Upper Jurassic or Lower Triassic. The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in reservoir rocks from the Late Palaeocene (the Lista formation).

Two oil zones totalling 2 m were encountered in the Shetland group. Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks were not encountered, and the exploration target in the Triassic is tight. A net oil zone of 3 m in the Lista formation was encountered in the secondary exploration target. Due to thin oil zones and uncertain extent of the reservoirs, there is no basis for providing a resource estimate.

Comprehensive data acquisition and sampling have been carried out. Two formation tests (Mini DST) have been carried out in the Shetland group, showing limited flow properties.

This is the first exploration well in production license 519. The license was awarded in the 20th licensing round in 2009.

The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 2,975 m below the sea surface, and concluded in Permian limestone (the Zechstein group). Water depth at the site is 382 m. The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 6201/11-3 was drilled by the drilling facility Bredford Dolphin, which will now proceed to production license 457 in the central part of the North Sea to drill wildcat well 16/1-16 where Wintershall Norway AS is the operator.
