NEWS FROM OTC BRASIL 2013: Pre-salt dominates OTC Brasil

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The massive pre-salt discoveries (50 billion to 100 billion bbl) made by Petrobras in the Santos basin are receiving special attention during the OTC conference this year and are the main catalyst of the event, 29 to 31 October, 2013, in Rio de Janeiro.
''These finds have been a game-changer, not only for Brazil, but the entire oil industry. It proved a new system to produce from carbonate reservoirs and, at the same time, helped in creating new Technologies,'' said OTC Brasil board member, Wafik Beydoun.
Petrobras set a new pre-salt production record on May 18, with 322,100 bopd. This was 11,000 barrels per day higher than the previous record, which was reached on April 17, when production reached 311,500 bopd.
Production of 300,000 bopd was reached just seven years after oil was first discovered in the pre-salt layer in 2006, taking less time to reach this level compared to other major offshore production areas around the world.
For example, it took 17 years after oil was first discovered to reach production of 300,000 bopd in the U.S. portion of the Gulf of Mexico. In the Campos basin, it took 11 years, and in the North Sea, nine. Unlike these areas, all pre-salt oil production occurs in deep waters, which makes this result even more impressive.
