Memory caliper for HTHP wells Read Well Services has introduced the first fully electronic 40-finger memory caliper tool rated above 200°C. Commissioned by Total E&P UK plc for operations on their Elgin-Franklin field, the device is lowered into the well to make precision measurements of internal diameter under high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP) conditions to determine integrity. The new tool delivers digital measurements to within a few thousandths of an inch, and can survive for up to 15 hours at a temperature of 205°C and pressures up to 17,500 psi. It provides 40 continuous electronic measurements of the well bore diameter using sensitive ‘fingers’, recording precise digital measurements of the well diameter in a battery-powered downhole memory pack. Individual measurements are recorded every 1/2 in. from the bottom to the top of the well – nearly 40 million in total. Data is then rapidly analyzed to give the operator a precise image of the condition of the well . . .
