Eni shuts Mellita gas complex in Libya due to armed clashes

BY BENOIT FAUCON

LONDON -- About 40% of Libya's natural gas production is now shut down after an Eni complex was forced to halt operations due to armed clashes, the country's deputy oil minister said. In an interview with Dow Jones, Omar Shakmak said around 40% of Libya's natural gas output is now halted, depriving the country of production normally exported to Italy or used locally.

Eni's local joint venture was forced to shut down its Mellitah complex in Libya's Northwest following clashes between rival militia. "We did a safe shutdown because it was not safe to continue operations," Mr. Shakmak said. "We will resume operations as soon as we have full security forces under the command of the security ministry," he added.
