  • Rig floor equipment: Automated pipe handler is certified

The automated safety concept of DrillTec’s vertical drilling rig, VDD 370.2, has been successfully certified by the German TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH, according to the European safety standard EN 61508. EN 61508 is based on the international standard IEC 61508. Since this new rig technology was introduced by DrillTec and its parent company, Max Streicher, in 2005, it has set a high-mobility benchmark and is anchoring new standards in rig automation and functional safety. During the rigs’ design phase, one objective was to make working on the rig as safe as possible by reducing direct manual operations wherever possible. A glance at VDD370 reveals that pipe handling’s manual operation has been automated. A mechanical pipe handler performs this task: after the driller has given the instruction “fetch pipe,” the handler travels down to the pipe rack, picks up a pipe, which may be of any diameter.
