Centrica opens first new field in northwest England in 10 years

BERKSHIRE -- Gas production has begun from an offshore site in northwest England, marking the first new field opening in the area for 10 years, U.K. utility Centrica said Tuesday.
The Rhyl gas field, located 39 km (24 mi.) offshore Morecambe Bay, was discovered in 2009 and is wholly owned by Centrica. Earlier this year, the company said the Rhyl reservoir was confirmed to extend further than originally anticipated. The area is thought to contain around 80 billion cubic feet of gas.
Centrica said the new reserves will help it to continue production from the area beyond 2020 and secure 400 jobs in the area.
The Morecambe Bay gas fields were first discovered in the 1970s and production began in 1985. At peak production, Centrica’s East Irish Sea operations are able to supply around 8 percent of U.K. residential gas demand, the company said.
