  • Software program offers predictive capability to optimize drilling

    J. Pruitt, W. Goldman and E. Claudey

he following article describes the background and development of a new drilling-mechanics model, and its application in calculating mechanical efficiency of any bit type in any rock strength. Comparisons of predictions and actual data were made for several wells, plus sample outputs from tests at the GRI, Catoosa, Oklahoma, test-well facility. The model’s application is proved by case history results from Norsk Hydro’s sidetracked well in the North Sea, which displayed a significant rate of penetration (ROP) improvement when a new bit design was recommended.
