AAPG 2013 luncheon presentation: Proving up Utica’s liquids window by targeting Point Pleasant formation

BY PRAMOD KULKARNI, Editor

PITTSBURGH – One of the highlights of the AAPG 2013 conference was an all-convention luncheon presentation James Palm CEO of Gulfport Energy, an Oklahoma –based independent, that has helped establish production from the liquids window of the Utica shale formation in Ohio.

“We initially used public data sources and performed rock studies and then integrated well log data to focus on the Point Pleasant formation, which runs below the Utica,” explained Palm. “Point Pleasant has higher resistivity, better porosity, lower clay and higher carbonate content. It is also very brittle, like the Eagle Ford.”

Gulfport has acquired 128,000 sq mi in the Point Pleasant liquids window. The shale formation is 4,000 to 10,000-ft. Gulfport is focusing on the upper two-thirds portion that has total organic content (TOC) greater than 2% and porosity greater than 5%.

“We’re drilling 8,500-9,000-ft laterals using rotary steerable drilling to stay within the sweet spot,” said Palm. “Our 2013 drilling program involves four rigs to drill 55 wells.”

Gulfport Energy is achieving a one-year payout for its wells and has established 6.59 MMboe of proved net reserves. With the highest flow rates reported for the play, Gulfport is planning to continue its drilling and completion activity to optimize lateral spacing and length and best fracture methods. Among the advanced techniques Gulfport is applying include through-bit logging, rotary steerable drilling and microseismic monitoring.

At the start of the luncheon session, the AAPG recognized Chris Bolhuis, a geology teacher from Hudsonville, Michigan, as its teacher of the year.

The AAPG 2013 conference concludes May 22 with technical presentations, delegate meetings and technical exhibits.
